Global Covid death toll nears 2.6 million

The global Covid death toll is fast approaching 2.6 million amid a worldwide vaccination rollout.

The fatalities reached 2,548,573 while the total caseload mounted to 114,728,460 on Wednesday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

Covid-19 deaths crossed the milestone of two million on January 15.

 

The US leads with the most deaths followed by Brazil, Mexico, India and the UK. The North American country’s fatalities surpassed 500,000 on February 22.

According to the university data, the US has so far registered 28,717,558 cases with 516, 476 deaths.

In fact, the first known deaths from the virus in the US were reported in early February 2020, both of them in Santa Clara County, California. It took four months to reach the first 100,000 deaths.

The death toll hit 200,000 in September and 300,000 in December. Then it took just over a month to go from 300,000 to 400,000 and about two months to climb from 400,000 to 500,000.

Brazil ranks second worldwide after the United States in terms of the number of deaths from Covid and third in terms of the number of confirmed cases, after the United States and India.

The country has registered 10,646,926 cases and 257,361 deaths so far, as per the data.

 

Meanwhile, India’s total caseload reached 11,124,527 while the death toll from the virus mounted to 157,248 on Wednesday, according to official figures.

Mexico has recorded 186,152 deaths while in UK about 123,530 people have died so far from the virus.
